lightweight aluminum architecture and comparatively compact dimensions were enticing, so Byrd starting scratching out some rough estimates on what it would take to give his torque challenged Bavarian brawler an all American heart transplant.I know a lot of people can relate to this, because it snowballed from simply thinking about it to tearing apart the car to make it happen, says Byrd.So much for leaving it stock.Despite the M3s diminutive size its smaller than a Chevy Cruze in all exterior dimensions a tape measure showed the average production LS engine would fit into the engine bay.Although the LS3 was only a couple of inches longer than the Bimmers engine, anyone whos swapped engines knows that even half an inch can mean the difference between instant success or prolonged frustration.Byrd also didnt want to give up was the near perfect handling balance that made the M3 a star of the Autobahn and road courses everywhere.From the very first thought of the swap, I knew altering the basics of the suspension geometry was out of the question, he says.The car may have been down on power, but I didnt want to give up at all the great driving dynamics.His solution was to basically melt the LS engine over and around the front suspension, fabricating the oil pan and headers in the car and relocated other engine accessories to preserve the M3s original suspension and steering geometry.And did we mention Byrd did all of the fab work himself in his home garage There are far more details in the swap project than we have space to describe them, but in a nutshell it involved cutting out the firewall and transmission tunnel, along with reshaping other body and chassis sections pushing them and tweaking them to find the last millimeter of clearance.Byrd also managed to splice in all sorts of body stiffness via frame rails cleverly grafted into the rockers, the addition of torque boxes and custom shock tower bracing up front, rear subframe stiffeners and a minimalist four point cage.It was a continual process of fitting one component or making room for it, then re thinking the process to see how the next one would fit, says Byrd.In many ways, it was like working in layers, requiring a lot of forethought to anticipate what one change might mean for the next several steps.When you look at Byrds one off, hand fabricated oil pan which wraps around the steering rack and front chassis cross member or the exquisitely constructed headers, its clear to see his attention to detail was second to none.The headers are full length 1 78 inch primaries that step down to 3 inch diameter all the way back, but offer all the ground clearance in the world, without rubbing, knocking or creating hot spots in the car, he says.Incorporating 3 inch pipes in a small car wasnt easy, but I had a lot of fun working with all that stainless.And the end result is a phenomenal sound and great performance.Just as intricate and important to the cars capability are electric fans keeps the engine cool, as well as houses the new oil cooler inside.Byrd enlarged the opening in the core support to increase the airflow to the radiator and converted the original air to oil cooler into a power steering cooler.He also removed the passenger side high beam lamp to create a high pressure air induction inlet for the conical air filter.Besides its functionality, it just plain looks cool as hell.The engine and transmission swap, however, are far from Byrds only exquisitely engineered accomplishments on the car.To support the wider rubber necessary to ensure that nearly three times the cars original horsepower is turned into forward thrust, the original flared fenders were widened about 2 inches all the way around.That was the other great fabrication challenge
